Most of our grandparents were like this;

lilac bushes pungent at the front porch,

near the garage

an old wooden row boat rests

upside down on sawhorses

Rusty pruning sheers beneath climbing yellow roses,

an old dog’s grave marker beneath a dead elm.

we’ve moved on from the shadows of their lives

to forge a legacy of our own;

fiber glass hot tub shell filled with algae,

gold’s gym weight set beset by weeds

and festooned with cobwebs,

an old jet ski carcass on a trailer

with flat tires.

In the backyard

an old dog crippled now with arthritis

Sniffs unhappily and stiff-tailed at his options
